Make Sure Your Resume Demonstrates Your Value
Make Sure Your Resume Demonstrates Your Value Make Sure Your Resume Demonstrates Your Value If youre writing your own resume, it can be tempting to include everything youve done over the last 20 years. Or longer. A long, boring, job history is the perfect way to make sure no one contacts you. If you want to get the attention of recruiters and hiring managers, itâs essential to demonstrate YOUR value. Immediately. Highlight your achievements. Present your resume in a modern format. Focus on positions that are relevant to employers. #1 Listing your responsibilities doesnt impress anyone because people in similar positions do similar things. Highlighting your achievements, the impact youve made is the best way to set yourself apart from your competition. #2 A snazzy format cant overcome boring, task-based content. But assuming the content is strong, a clean, modern format thats easy to scan can both get readers to actually read your resume AND will enhance your brand. #3 Focus on the last 10 to 15 years of your career. While you may think that providing details on a position 5 jobs and 20 years ago is critically important, recruiters and employers wont. A better way to present earlier positions is an Earlier Career section with title and company only. No dates. If you feel the urge to write lengthy resume that catalogs every position youve held over the last 20+ years, resist. A generic resume designed to appeal to everyone appeals to no one. I really think my background is a strong fit for this role, and I look forward to continuing the process.â or âThank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I am now even more excited about the opportunity to join your group; I think my experience is a strong fit with your needs. I look forward to hearing back from you.â Bottom line: an interview is not successful (on your part) if the interviewer comes away liking you as a candidate, but questioning your interest level in the position. What To Do When You Cannot Find Jobs In Your Area Searching for a job takes time and energy and leads to a lot of disappointment. It is even worse when you cant find jobs that are close to home. So what do you do? How do you continue with your search and find a job that will work? The following are some guidelines to help you move forward with your search and figure out what to do next. Decide how far you are willing to commute Look for jobs that fit into your desired commuting distance If there are not jobs that fit your commuting distance, look for jobs that offer telecommuting positions. This can be a very good option for people with families, students, or if you are looking for a second job. If there are no telecommuting positions or you do not feel that telecommuting is not the right option for you then you have a big decision to make. Should you move to find a job? Now, you dont need to jump up and move right away. You can start looking for jobs near an area you would be willing to move to. Since you are moving for the purpose of getting a job, you should really wait to move until you have a job secured. Who knows, your employer may even help pay for your moving costs. It is hard to not have a job close to home, but there are still options for you and even though it may be scary, moving for a job is something that many people have and will continue to do, so you dont have to feel alone.

Strong Action Verbs and Your Resume -
Strong Action Verbs and Your Resume -Expert Professional Resume Writing Tip 7Strong action verbslove them? Hate them? Couldnt care less?If you want a winning resume, you need to learn to love them. Trust me, when you write a resume with weak, boring language and the same old tired clichs, you wont get the attention of hiring managers and recruiters. You have a unique experience and a unique career story and you should be using your own words to describe that on your professional resume. A compelling resume is an effective resume. You may have an impressive career and decades of relevant experience, but if youre using boring words to explain your employment history, then no one is paying attention.Using strong action verbs in your resume writing can help you tell a compelling story about your work experience and what you can bring to the table for a prospective employer. In doing so, you will get their attention and hopefully get that interview. How Should You Use Action Verbs in Your Professional Resume?Every resume, I repeat EVERY resume should have strong action verbs strategically placed throughout the resume. fruchtwein importantly, use the action verbs at the beginning of the majority of your bullet points. Please do yourselfand every hiring manager out therea favor absolutely do not start your sentences with Responsible for, Worked with, or any other less than power-punching beginning. These phrases are functional and commonly used in resumes, but they really do nothing for your resume or experience. In my time as an HR professional looking over resumes, Ive never been captivated by the words responsible for or worked with. As a resume writer, I dont use them. Theyre just so boring. I want something that jumps out at me and grabs my attention. Even a one-page resume seems way too long to read when it has that kind of dull language.Plus, what do those kinds of words actually tell a potential employer? They dont convey much. Think about itjust because you wer e responsible for something doesnt mean you actually carried out the work, or did it particularly well.A potential employer would much rather hear about the solid accomplishments you have in your work history than just read a copy/paste of duties from the description of your brde job. Managers want to know what a job candidate actually did, and what you can actually do for them. Action verbs help you tell them what you are capable of. Remember, as a job applicant you are trying to persuade them to call you for an interview. That means you need to use persuasive writinglike action verbsthroughout your resume and your titelblatt letter. What Are Some Good Action Verbs to Use When I Write My Resume? Here are a few examples of my favorite action words?Directed?Spearheaded?Championed?Pioneered?Reengineered?Captivated?Exceeded?Structuredand the list could go on and on. Be creative in your action verb choice and choose strong words to begin every single sentence you write. These words commun icate action, results, accomplishments, real experience and abilities, and contributions, which are all key components in creating a great resume to highlight your qualifications. For more ideas about what action verbs might be right for your resume, look to the job description or company website. There, youll get an idea of the kind of language the company uses, and this information can help you tailor your resume to what they are looking for.Does the company seem more the type to want to see action verbs like collaborate or the type to want action verbs like compete? Does the sttte description use words and phrases like increase revenue, or leverage or manage? If so, try to work these into the descriptions you write of your qualifications. Make a list of the action verbs you see on the companys website or in the job description. Dont try to cram all of them into your resume, and dont exclusively use these words, but use the list to pull from and to help you generate other ideas for words that can help you write a stronger resume and come across as a strong candidate.Examples of Using Action Words in Your ResumeChances are you already have some action words in your resume, but perhaps you arent using them effectively or strategically. For example, do you have an item in a bulleted list that says something along the lines of Responsible for increasing company ausverkauf revenue? If you do, thats an easy fix. Rewrite the sentence to show how increasing sales was one of your achievementsand like I mention above, move the action word to the front of the sentence. A more effective sentence for your resume would be Increased sales revenue by XX% over XX years. The sentence starts with a compelling action verb that shows a potential employer youre about to tell them something you actually did that is hopefully relevant to their needs.Lets look at another example. Perhaps you have a strengths section on your resume that just lists things like effective communicator or d etail-oriented.For a more effective resume, try rewriting these kinds of strengths and skills to include an action verb. Perhaps along the lines of Facilitating internal communications or Ensuring top-quality work product. And then, of course, demonstrate how you have used this skill platzset throughout your career. Remember, anyone can claim to have done anything when they are applying for a jobuse action verbs coupled with numbers, statistics, or reference quotes to help you provide the proof of what you have actually done and to make the description of your experience interesting. If a potential employer wants to actually take the time to read your resume, it will greatly increase your chances of landing an interview. In your Career Summary section, dont say what you are using a recitation of clichd soft skills. Instead, use action verbs to highlight what youve done and what you will do.If you happen to be still in school, perhaps as a graduate student or going back to school for a degree or certification in a new area, you can strengthen your resume a bit by changing the language in your education section. Instead of saying Currently attending, write Earning degree in Earning conveys hard work, dedication, and motivation. Thats the kind of verb you want associated with your education and your work experiencenot a passive word like attending. The most effective resumes are the ones that actually say somethingthat tell the story of your work history and share your personal brand with an employer. After you rewrite your resume and cover letter to include action verbs, dont stop there. Top Tips for Recruiting Events and Conferences from Capital One
Top Tips for Recruiting Events and Conferences from Capital One Melissa Stevens is the Senior Manager of Campus Diversity Inclusion Recruiting at Capital One.Having worked in campus recruiting for 14 years, and as part of Capital One Financial Corporations campus recruiting events gruppe for eight of those years, conference season is one of my favorite times of year because of all the on-campus recruiting events and large conferences, like the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. These events offer the incredibly exciting opportunity to meet with experts, peers and potential employers, but they can also feel overwhelming if you are new to the recruiting and networking process. To help reduce any stress you may feel in preparing for an upcoming event or conference, Im sharing the top tips for a successful (and less stressful) conference. One thing I have learned in attending many events is that everyone is feeling at least a little bit nervous. Know that you arent alone, and were all in this together Be sure to take your time and take a deep breath2. Prepare your schedule in advance. At both large and small events, there is often SO much to do that preparing in advance is a must. For larger events, I highly recommend downloading the event app and finding a handful of speakers and activities that are absolute must attend sessions and commit yourself to doing them. Schedule some dedicated time to spend in the career expo and conducting interviews. The more you can scope things out in advance and get a schedule together for your time, the less it will feel like youre bouncing from session to session and missing out on things that are really important to you.3. Give yourself flex time.Plan some free time to be able to flex during the conference. For smaller events, make a list in advance of the booths you want to visit, but give yourself some extra time to visit employers that may be new to you. Making the most of the time you have at the conference is esse ntial, but at some point in the day, grabbing a coffee or some food (or even a quick nap) may be important to keep yourself fresh and to make it through the rest of the day. You dont want to over schedule yourself so much that you dont enjoy yourself.4. Be yourself. You are the one and only you, so bring your whole self to the conference or event. It is important for you to feel comfortable (that includes shoes too) and be able to showcase everything that is awesome about you with employers and your peers. Say hi to the person sitting next to you at the speaker session, have a real and honest conversation at a career booth and show off your skills in an interview. If you feel like youre having to be someone you arent or employers dont like the real you, thats their loss not yours, and it wasnt meant for you5. Have funI cant emphasize this enough at the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is that you had a great time. Enjoy it, get to know other attendees, meet speaker s and company attendees and make connections. And most importantly, have fun--Fairygodboss is proud to partner with Capital One.
